Digital marketing – “Any form of marketing products or services that involves electronic devices”, Sounds simple doesn’t it?
But is it so simple?
Yes it is, but there are more to digital marketing than just a single line of definition.
Since the beginning of business, marketing has been involved in promoting products according to the consumer need. As we evolved with time, our marketing strategies adapted with the era. 21st century has seen a revolutionary change in marketing strategy.
But what is marketing actually?
There is no specific definition for marketing but predominantly it means the promotion and branding of specific products or companies to the general people. As of today majority of the media we consume comes through digital channels such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.
What is digital marketing then? Digital marketing is also marketing but with a touch of technology. The marketers have found more efficient way to promote their products or services than billboard marketing or newspaper marketing.
Facebook, twitter or YouTube has audiences far beyond than what previous medias had, it is global not an area centric so marketers have tried to build the right strategy so the channels or medias could reach the audiences at the right place at the right time, isn’t that what marketing is all about?
Through digital marketing the companies can easily keep track of their audience or how much they have connected with their consumers.
Through the rise of digital marketing, new doors of opportunities have opened for business to draw out people towards their brand or product or services.
The digital marketing industry is substantially competitive and there are various digital marketing methods, some of these are Email marketing, social media marketing and Search engine marketing
Social media marketing (SMM)
Imagine a scenario, you’re watching an amazing video in facebook and suddenly an annoying ad pops up and interrupts your video and you are bound to watch that ad for 5-7 seconds. Yes that is what social media marketing or SMM is, using social media such as Facebook, twitter or others to promote and advertise their company or services.
Social media marketing is not only limited to ads, it also involves creating and sharing content on social media networks. Every post, likes, comments and replies serves a purpose.
Among the digital marketing methods, SMM is more personal to the audience because they can directly interact with the brand or company and also the brand/company can study the consumer behavior and get a good sense of idea what the consumers’ perspective on their company is
Unlike SMM, Email marketing is more commercial. This form of marketing mostly helps to develop relationship with potential clients or customers.
For example, David went to a restaurant on his wedding anniversary with his wife, on the next anniversary the same restaurant sent a mail wishing the couple for their anniversary and offered a discount of 50% if they spend their anniversary here again.
This form of marketing is customer or client oriented and used for business purpose mostly.
However, there are downsides to it. At its best it keeps its customers informed up-to-date and at its worst it fills the spam box with rubbish and fake click bait emails
Search Engine Marketing(SEM)
SEM is a practice where business owners pays the search engine such as Google or Bing to advertise their business based on user’s search keywords. For example
SEM is one of the most efficient way to grow your business because it can attract traffic to your website very easily.
